TechLetters #173 First event of diplomatic consequences due to a cyberattack. Deepfakes targeting investors, impersonating stock exchange chief. Governance of Privacy Sandbox. Tagging AI creations.
Security
Diplomatic consequences of a cyberattack. Germany recalled its ambassador to Russia for 'consultations in Berlin' following an alleged cyberattack on German political party. Such consequences as a result of a cyberattack happened for the first time in history (world scale).
Deepfakes targeting investors in India. The head of India's stock exchange, Sundararaman Ramamurthy, warned of rising investment scams and deepfakes targeting retail traders. Imposters (via WhatsApp) used a deepfake depicting him to deceive employees and the public. "the exchange asked investors not to trust such videos and audios and not to follow fake recommendations or unsolicited communication circulated through deceptive means impersonating Ramamurthy".
Privacy
Privacy Sandbox Governance. Submission to Competition and Markets Authority about Google/Chrome Privacy Sandbox. I initially put the idea forward in 2021, now it's getting traction, and I provide some details. It's about privacy, competition, web, ad technology. Transparency and governance are a must here.
Technology Policy
TikTok will start automatically tagging videos created by AI/LLM. Those it detects as such (provenance tags included by popular generators like dallee/bing).
Other
Implementing AI features in Chrome. Designing AI features considering risks and safety is hard. Soon, lots of texts attributed to humans will actually be written automatically by AI. How will that affect our world?
