TechLetters #62 - the practical-medical consequences of a cyberattack on a hospital. Hacked: Finland, Canada. How much money does it take to convince an employees to hack his company?
Security
Consequences of cyberattack on a hospital. How to prepare a contingency plan in case of a cyberattack on a hospital or a microbiology laboratory? Have paper copies with the most crucial data.
Canada's Ministry of Foreign Affairs hacked. "the government is concerned the attack was conducted by Russia". But this is unclear. They are only "concerned, if".
Insider threat. Cybercriminals recruit employees of companies/organizations to hack/infect places where they work. For money e.g. $ 500,000. Problem is growing. Bonus questions: how much would employees of your company (for example) , e.g. yours, agree to it? For how much?
Finland diplomats hacked. Finnish diplomats have been the target of some state's cyber intelligence using Pegasus. Official statement from the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Privacy
Progressive Web Apps privacy bug near to a fix. After 7 years this privacy issue/bug/review/etc is now "closed". Standardisation document recognised the issue. Next steps: fix the implementation side. I explained the problem here (demo currently down).
Motion against Privacy Sandbox? Axel Springer wants to force Brussels to force Google to stop the phasing out of third-party cookies. Privacy vs Competition clashing. Stay tuned.
Google replacing “Federated Learning of Cohorts”. With Topics. Will that be better? “If a caller is only present on one site about a topic, and the call returns that topic, then the caller can infer the site that was visited”. "reduces the amount of cross-site identifiable information". Replace ID or raw sites with "categories" of visited sites. Now the challenge is that categories of visited content can also uniquely describe the user. Initially it wasn’t clear if this API really replaced FloC, a lot of people were confused or irritated with the way the announcement happened.
Face recognition of masked faces. Apple's iPhone/iOS15.4 will be able to recognise its user even when wearing the mask - that's right, FaceID will unlock the screen even with a mask. So: users with masks can be recognised with face recognition, with high accuracy. Good to know!
Technology Policy
Quantum anniversary. 20th anniversary of the factoring of the number "15" with a quantum computer. Quantum computing has a long way to go. Huge progress! But be extremely careful of those saying that it's just around the corner. They might be unaware of the field complexity.
