TechLetters #64 - Cyber risk due to Russia-Ukraine conflict. Are cyber sanctions effective? Planting fake evidence with spyware. Fixing ambient light data leaks.
Security
Cyber shrapnels from Ukraine-Russia war? European Central Bank is warning from cyberattacks in context of possible Ukraine-Russia armed conflict. It's true: other states must be wary of the 'shrapnels'. Also a cyberattack on UK’s foreign ministry.
Cyber alert also in USA. “Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has issued an alert for American organizations: "currently no specific credible threats ... we are mindful of the potential for the Russian government to consider escalating destabilizing actions in ways that may impact others outside of Ukraine".
Western sanctions for cyberattacks? Russian ambassador to Sweden: ‘Excuse my language, but we don’t give a shit about your sanctions’
Planting fake “evidence”. Cyber operation intending to hack activists devices to implant faked/forged "incriminating evidence".
Privacy
W3C light sensor fix. Finally a mitigation of a data leak via light sensor is nearing to a fix. Formalisation of quantisation of the readout: instead of reading each raw readout of the light sensor, it will be rounded to the nearest multiply of 50 lx. I had this case study assessed in a paper. But the first time I had a look was in 2016.
Differential privacy at a scale. How it’s done at Google.
